11 May 2026 - Lunch with Howard & Kathi Steffey, Last Day at Scott Air Force Base

Today was our last day at Scott Air Force Base.  We got caught up on some admin stuff around here and then headed into the nearby town of O'Fallon before having lunch with our good friends Howard and Kathi Steffey.  Howard was in-charge of the Munitions section at the 132d Fighter Wing before being chosen as the first Wing Command Chief.  I followed in Chief Steffey's footsteps, only in Communications.  I was in-charge of Communications Maintenance until 2007 when I was chosen as the fourth Wing Command Chief. We both go back to the 1970's in the Iowa Air National Guard so we have many, many mutual friends and experiences.  We spent some time today reminiscing and Howard dragged out his old Air Guard history books.  Strolling through some pages I found a couple of me from back in the 80's and 90's.
I was a master sergeant (E7) here working on a computer.

We had a great time seeing Howard and Kathi again.  Kathi is big into 3D and laser printing and she made Doreen a sea shell for the camper.

After lunch we got fuel and headed back to the base to start getting ready to bug-out in the morning.  Tomorrow we travel about 171 miles to our next stop, Terre Haut IN.  We will be there for three nights before moving on to Camp Atterbury, south of Indianapolis.

Next report, Terre Haute Campground.
